The Braves recently designated two pitchers for assignment — Joel Payamps and José Suárez — following a number of rough outings to begin the season. Through 12 appearances, Payamps posted an 8.22 ERA. Suárez, who actually opened the year in Atlanta’s rotation, wasn’t much better, recording a 6.61 ERA across eight outings.
Of the two, Payamps cleared waivers and has been optioned to Gwinnett. Suárez, however, was claimed by the Seattle Mariners — ironically, the same team the Braves are set to face to begin this week.

Joel Payamps may have cleared waivers, but his path back to the major-league roster won’t be easy with so many arms returning.
Spencer Strider made his season debut on Sunday, and even with the rocky outing, he’s a lock to hold a roster spot moving forward. Raisel Iglesias is expected back from the IL this week after dealing with a minor shoulder issue. Dylan Dodd is set to begin a rehab assignment soon, and even Hurston Waldrep is trending toward a return sometime in June.
Add in the fact that Atlanta also has arms in Gwinnett who are pushing for opportunities — like James Karinchak and Hayden Harris — and Payamps’ window may have already slipped away.
