Falcons landing top coaching candidates just got a lot harder

Massive news rippled through the NFL world yesterday when the Baltimore Ravens officially announced the firing of longtime head coach John Harbaugh. On one hand, Harbaugh instantly becomes a name to watch for the Falcons. On the other, the entire hiring landscape just got a lot more difficult.

The Ravens job now vaults to the top of the list of available openings, and there really isn’t a close second. Their organizational stability, front office, and most importantly, an MVP-caliber quarterback make it a dream destination for any candidate.

It may not stop there. Adam Schefter reported that Harbaugh didn’t just receive calls from teams with open head coaching jobs, but also from organizations that currently have sitting head coaches.

There’s a decent chance several more head coaching jobs could become available over the next week, including teams currently preparing for the Wild Card round this weekend, which would only add more competition for the Falcons to deal with.

Before the Ravens parted ways with John Harbaugh, you could make a strong argument that Atlanta was one of the more desirable landing spots. They play in a weak division and have several high-end players on both sides of the ball to build around.

That’s not longer the case, and there’s now a real possibility the Falcons slide even further down the list of attractive openings once the results of this Wild Card round are in.
