Well, that sucked. After waiting about six months for Braves baseball, fans watched the Padres sweep the first series of the season.
To make matters even worse, it was how the Braves lost that added insult to injury. On the national holiday that is Opening Day, Brian Snitker turned to Hector Neris in the 7th inning of a one-run game.
The veteran entered the game with Atlanta holding the lead; he left without recording an out after surrendering three runs. The Braves would go on to lose the next three games, including back-to-back shutouts in the final two.
Now, there’s a streak of 22 innings in which a Braves player has failed to cross home plate. It’s been dreadful to watch. Each facet of the club has disappointed. The relief core was a concern coming into the campaign, and it immediately reared its ugly head. The starting rotation wasn’t great, outside of Spencer Schwellenbach, and the lineup disappeared for more than two games.
It’s hard not to be bothered by that kind of start, even though it’s a very long season. However, it’s nice to see someone from the team admit it’s not good, with Brian Snitker telling Atlanta media, “Well, I mean, it’s bad — o-4 is pretty bad.”

The Braves are now staring at potentially dropping the first two series of the season as the club heads to Los Angeles to face the Dodgers. It’s not a great place to be so early in the season, but in that same breath, it’s early in the season.
Let’s just hope this week’s set in Chavez Ravine isn’t as painful as the one in Petco Park.
