A bombshell dropped on the morning of Day 1 of the NFL Draft, as Andy Slater of Fox Sports South Florida reported that all felony charges against James Pearce Jr. could be dismissed if he completes a six-month program. The program requires him to stay out of trouble for its duration and attend counseling.
The resolution was agreed to by Rickea Jackson — Pearce’s ex-girlfriend who was involved in the incident — along with her attorney. Pearce’s legal team has also confirmed he intends to enter the program to avoid going to trial.

It’s a second chance most people would never be afforded — and one James Pearce Jr. now has to make count. But while he may have a path back to football, his situation with the Falcons is far from resolved.
For starters, the NFL still has to weigh in, and some form of discipline feels inevitable. The real questions are how long Pearce will be suspended and when the league will make that decision.
There’s also the timing element tied to the legal agreement. His charges won’t officially be dropped until he completes the six-month program. It’s entirely possible the league takes that into account and keeps him off the field until it’s finished, which would already sideline him for a significant portion of the season. From there, they could tack on additional games — or allow him to return.
That feels like a realistic path, but for now, nothing has been made official.
Then there’s the Falcons’ side of things. This is one of the first major tone-setting decisions for Matt Ryan and the new regime. They could opt to move on from Pearce altogether — via trade or release — to send a clear message about accountability.
From a football standpoint, that wouldn’t be an easy call. Pearce showed as a rookie he’s exactly what Atlanta has been searching for off the edge. But leadership isn’t just about talent evaluation; it’s about standards.
The only thing that feels close to certain right now is that Pearce will miss time to begin the season. Even if the legal process is trending toward resolution, it would be surprising to see him on the field in Week 1.
Everything else remains up in the air. Whether Pearce takes advantage of this second chance, and whether the Falcons decide to stand by him or move in another direction, will define what comes next.
