Braves recall Jesse Chavez, Nacho Alvarez hits 60-day IL

Following last night’s loss to the Cardinals, in which the bullpen imploded, the Braves announced Jesse Chavez is back with the club. Top prospect Nacho Alvarez has also been transferred to the 60-day IL, and Nathan Wiles has been optioned to AAA Gwinnett.

The Jesse Chavez saga may never end in Atlanta. The two sides just can’t quit each other, no matter how many times they try. Chavez appeared in one game for the Braves earlier in the season, giving up a run in two innings against the Dodgers. The next day, he was designated for assignment.

Chavez attempted to find a new home, but nobody wanted him and has since spent his time in Gwinnett, where he’s actually been lights out. Over 6.1 innings, Chavez boasts a 1.42 ERA with a silly 17.1 K/9 for the Stripers. Hopefully, he can rekindle some of that magic we’ve seen from him in the past. Lord knows the Braves need another solid reliever… or three.

However, the bigger news really surrounds Nacho Alvarez Jr., who is headed to the 60-day IL with a wrist injury. The issue first revealed itself early in Spring Training, but it didn’t sound too serious. Now, he’s slated to miss at least the first couple of months of the season, and it could be something much more serious. The Braves desperately need to find answers at shortstop, and while Alvarez taking over as the starter this year might have been a long shot, he at least provided a glimmer of hope at the position.
