Report: Braves eyeing Freddy Peralta ahead of the trade deadline

According to Hector Gomez, the Braves, Rays, and Brewers are eying Mets starting pitcher Freddy Peralta ahead of the trade deadline — with Gomez calling Milwaukee the top suitor as of now.

The Mets have already waved the white flag on the season, with reports indicating that essentially every player on their roster is available at the right price — Peralta being the most obvious trade candidate. He’s in the last year of his contract, and in a seller’s market where every competing team will be looking for starting pitching, he’ll have plenty of suitors.

Peralta is amid a career-worst season, carrying a 4.66 ERA over 104.1 innings. But there’s no denying the talent and upside, which was on full display a year ago when he posted a 2.70 ERA on his way to a fifth-place finish in the NL Cy Young race.

I’ve said it plenty already, and I’ll keep reiterating it until the deadline passes: I have real reservations about the Braves and Mets completing a trade of any significance. Since the two rivals joined the same division, they’ve completed only a handful of deals, and none involved an impact player anywhere near Peralta’s level. The Mets aren’t going to be eager to help the Braves accomplish anything — you’d have to think there’d be a significant tax Atlanta would have to pay to acquire anybody from New York.
