Ozzie Albies also went 2-for-2 with a couple of RBIs in a much-needed bounce back game after a month of May he’d like to put in the rearview mirror.
On the mound, Bryce Elder gave up an early two-run homer but made it through 6.2 innings while allowing just three runs, exiting with a 4-3 lead. Robert Suarez recorded the final out of the seventh and three more in the eighth, and Raisel Iglesias shut the door for the 29th consecutive time — giving the Braves the upper hand as they go for another series win.
Before the game, Walt Weiss provided a number of injury updates as well.
Drake Baldwin won’t rejoin the Braves on this homestand, but the following one is a possibility — running from June 16th through June 21st. Atlanta has had no problem continuing to stack wins and maintain a near 10-game lead in the NL East, though it hasn’t been because of any production from behind the plate.
Sandy Leon is now hitting .071 over 13 games, and Chadwick Tromp is sporting a .469 OPS. The Braves desperately need their starting catching tandem back, but Sean Murphy isn’t expected anytime soon. Weiss said yesterday that Murphy’s cast has been removed and he is now in a splint, but it will still be several weeks before he begins baseball activities. An August return is the best case scenario.
Weiss also commented on Hurston Waldrep, who began his rehab assignment Monday with two scoreless innings in the Florida Complex League. He said Waldrep still has a ways to go, as the Braves are treating this process like his Spring Training. It will be at least a month before they consider him an option in Atlanta.
