There might be some debate about the top overall prospect in the Braves system, but there’s none when it comes to the top pitching prospect. That title has belonged to Cam Caminiti since the start of the season, and with Didier Fuentes and JR Ritchie graduating from prospect status, there isn’t even a close second anymore.
The 19-year-old — he turns 20 tomorrow — recently received the call to Double-A after what was quite possibly the best start of his professional career, one in which he struck out 14 batters and allowed just one run over 6.2 innings.
Caminiti’s debut for Columbus wasn’t quite as dominant. In fact, it took just one batter for him to be welcomed to the Southern League, as Josh Adamczewski homered to begin the game.

Caminiti settled down from there, though. He allowed just one more run over the next 5.1 innings and struck out three — two of which came against Adamczewski, so there was a nice little battle between the two top prospects.
At this very moment, Caminiti is the one pitcher in the Braves system who’s shown true frontline starter potential if everything goes right. The organization has worked on a ton of things mechanically with him this season, which is why the surface-level numbers aren’t exactly eye-popping, but that’s what this entire process is about — taking a prospect with immense upside and molding him into the player you believe he can be.
Caminiti has done a very nice job handling this season, and when he’s at his best, flashing a legit six-pitch mix, it’s easy to see why the entire baseball world is high on his potential.
The next calendar year is going to be big for him. He’s inching closer to the majors, and the Braves have never been hesitant to call up their prospects. If he starts flashing his best stuff with more consistency, we could see him in Atlanta as early as next season.
