Throughout much of the process, the Falcons seemed prime to hire Bill Belichick until a report from Adam Schefter came out of nowhere, announcing the team was hiring Raheem Morris.
Belichick was considered the favorite by gambling outlets, among NFL insiders, and the general public. Jonathan Jones reported that Arthur Blank was desperate to hire him too; Josina Anderson even went as far as to report that she expected the Falcons to hire Belichick. By all accounts, it was Belichick’s job to lose.
However, there were reports and rumors of internal disputes among the search committee regarding the prospect of hiring Belichick. The door was left open, and Raheem Morris took advantage in his second interview, which he nailed according to the search committee.
Morris apparently had a very thorough plan among other things that stuck out, but one of the main selling points for him was his ability to bring Zac Robinson with him to Atlanta. The former Rams quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator was the cycle’s hottest offensive coordinator candidate, and he turned down more than a handful of opportunities to follow Morris to the Falcons.
It’s becoming clear that Morris came to Arthur Blank, Rich McKay and the rest of the Falcons search committee with a guarantee that Robinson would be his offensive coordinator. A report from The Athletic confirms as such.
“It’s a good sign that Morris’ new offensive coordinator, Zac Robinson — the former Rams quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator who had multiple OC interviews elsewhere — always intended to follow Morris if he got a job.”
Robinson always intended to follow Morris, who interviewed for countless openings and surely pitched other clubs on the idea of Robinson coming to their teams. The Falcons end up with both in Atlanta and though there’s still a lot of work to do at the quarterback position, Robinson should go a long way.
