The Fall Classic just wrapped up a couple of days ago as the Rangers topped the Diamondbacks 5-0 to capture their first World Series as a franchise. Now, the Falcons are the oldest franchise in the major four professional sports leagues to never win a championship, according to CBS Sports.
Years after an epic Super Bowl collapse, the Dirty Birds are still the butt of the joke in sports. They’ve gotten close a few times but have never climbed to the top of the mountain.
The Dan Reaves-led Falcons topped the 49ers and Vikings to reach Super Bowl XXXIII but ultimately fell short at the hands of John Elway and the star-studded Broncos. The club reached the conference championship some odd years later but never sniffed the Lombardi until more than a decade later.
Being on the wrong end of the largest comeback in Super Bowl history will forever be what the Falcons are associated with. I don’t have to tell you what happened. Nobody needs to. All that needs to be said is 28-3, and wounds are re-opened.
However, if Falcons fans can find any solace in this, they aren’t the only club to never win a Super Bowl. The Cardinals, Lions, Titans, Chargers, Browns, Bills, and Vikings are still waiting on their first.
Some in Bills Mafia might even rather be in Falcons fans’ shoes than lose four straight Super Bowls in the ’90s. Unfortunately, those clubs won championships prior to the AFL-NFL merger.
Moreover, it doesn’t seem like the Falcons are even close. Arthur Smith’s team seems to have more questions than answers and is in quarterback purgatory. It’s the worst place to be in football. It could be a while before we see a Super Bowl parade in Atlanta.
