O’Day was nearly perfect in his 19 appearances for the Braves last season, posting a minuscule 1.10 ERA with a 12.1 K/9 — the highest mark of his 13-year career.
Because of that, I was shocked the Braves decided to turn down his $3.5 million option for 2021, but this is yet another sign that payroll could be tight this season because of the COVID-19 pandemic. There are still relievers on the market that Anthopoulos could turn to, including two former Braves — Mark Melancon and Shane Greene. Still, losing O’Day stings a little, and is another reason to believe Atlanta’s relief core will not be as good in 2021.
