With their second pick in the fourth round, the Falcons take a safety out of California — Jaylinn Hawkins.
Hawkins spent five years at Cal and recorded nine interceptions in his junior and senior seasons combined. Standing at 6’2″, 210 pounds, he’s a physical player that can lay the boom, but despite the high number of interceptions, scouts don’t believe he has the coverage ability to make it as a safety in the NFL. With three starting-caliber safeties already on the roster, I wouldn’t expect him to be anything more than a special teams body as a rookie.
Here’s what NFL.com’s draft analyst Lance Zierlein had to say about Hawkins, and let’s just say, it’s not pretty:
Physical safety whose lack of speed and cover talent could pigeonhole him as a box safety at the next level. His eyes and instincts are good enough in space, but Hawkins just doesn’t have the twitch to make enough plays on the football. He’s a striker, but not reliable as a “get him down” tackler in the open field and that will work against him. He will need to shine as a special-teams contributor to make a roster.
