The situation surrounding the injuries to Max Fried and Kyle Wright is not good. They are both expected to miss at least a couple of months, and it’s possible neither will return before the All-Star break. On the flip side, it seems–for now–the Braves have avoided the worst case scenario, which would have been season-ending surgery.
Regardless, the spots left open by the absences of Fried and Wright must be filled for the foreseeable future. They have some internal options in Jared Shuster, Dylan Dodd, and Michael Soroka, but none of them are guaranteed to have much success at the major-league level. In fact, I would go as far as to say Shuster and Dodd aren’t particularly close to being ready for a permanent role in the rotation. The Braves need at least one more arm, but there aren’t many places to turn this early in the season.
On the latest episode of SportsTalkATL, we discuss the internal options as well as where Alex Anthopoulos could turn for reinforcements.
