The Falcons are preparing for their preseason finale against the Steelers on Thursday, which will be quickly followed by final roster cuts in one week’s time on August 29th.
Last week against the Bengals, starters suited up. Desmond Ridder and the offense gained over 100 yards but netted only about 80 due to a few penalties. In all, the new-look group looked balanced and effective. Bijan Robinson totaled 26 yards on five touches, Drake London hauled in a pair of passes, and Kyle Pitts had a smooth one-handed grab.
The defense faced Trevor Siemian, so it wasn’t Cincinnati’s first-team offense, but Ryan Nielsen’s unit looked the part, applying pressure via Grady Jarrett, Calais Campbell, and David Onyemata.
Given the new rules about roster cuts, I’m curious to see how the Falcons approach Week 3 of the preseason. Will they give the starters another run? Will they play the fringe roster guys?
When asked about what his plan was, Arthur Smith said the Falcons are still mulling things over. “I think we’ve got a decent idea, I just really want to see how the next two days go,” said Smith. “We’ll finalize that Tuesday night.”
It seems we will know the answer Wednesday morning. To me, I think the starters got some more burn because of how sloppy the drive from Week 2 was. Still, some starters are still banged up, so I wouldn’t be shocked if they didn’t suit up.
The Falcons need all the time they can get to gel. I would play the starters.
