The Hawks are at a crossroads this offseason.
Atlanta is expected to trade one of Trae Young or Dejounte Murray, and there wasn’t much confidence from the fan base until Sunday’s lottery drawing.
The Hawks won the No. 1 overall pick, which should give general manager Landry Fields enough assets at his disposal to right the ship, but it also seems that what Atlanta’s GM does this offseason is anyone’s best guess.
If you ask NBA insider Kevin O’Connor, he expects the Hawks to be ‘especially active in the trade market’ and added that a ‘wild result’ could be coming.
“No clear-cut choice for any of these picks this year. Going to be a fascinating pre-draft process. I’d expect the Hawks and Rockets to especially be active in the trade market. Wild result,” said O’Connor of The Ringer.
The Hawks very well could auction off the No. 1 pick and acquire a star to pair with one of Dejounte Murray or Trae Young. They could also make the pick and pair one of their All-Star point guards with Alex Sarr or another prospect that Atlanta’s front office likes.
The Atlanta Hawks have options, which is all you can ask for as a fan of this team. The club has the opportunity to get themselves off the hamster wheel they’ve been on since their Eastern Conference finals run. The Hawks haven’t been good enough to compete for a championship, constantly making the play-in tournament; however, they haven’t been bad enough to be in a position to draft a franchise-altering player… oh, wait.
Atlanta has always been somewhere in the middle, but this is the big break they’ve been waiting for, landing the top pick. The Hawks have the ammo to change the direction of the organization.
