Why Brent Rooker Could Be the Braves’ Ideal Trade Target This Offseason

Brent Rooker Braves trade targets

The Braves and Athletics have quite a history of blockbuster trades in recent years. Three seasons ago, Braves GM Alex Anthopoulos made a major move, sending a package of top prospects to Oakland for first baseman Matt Olson. Then, the following offseason, he swung another deal, bringing in catcher Sean Murphy from the A’s in a complex three-team trade that ultimately sent William Contreras to the Brewers.

Looking back, neither trade has been a clear win for either side. For the Braves, there’s always going to be a “what-if” regarding Freddie Freeman, who’s now just one win away from another World Series, this time with the Dodgers. And while Olson has been a force in Atlanta’s lineup, Sean Murphy has had a tougher time. Since the 2023 All-Star break, he’s struggled significantly, ranking as one of the least productive offensive catchers in baseball.

Still, there’s clearly familiarity between the Braves and Athletics front offices, and there’s one name in Oakland that should have Atlanta’s full attention this offseason: outfielder Brent Rooker.

Rooker is coming off a career year, belting 39 home runs with a batting average just under .300. He’s blossomed into one of the most formidable hitters in the league, and with three more seasons of team control, he could be one of the hottest trade assets if the A’s decide to put him on the market.

The Braves, meanwhile, have a real need for outfield help. Neither Jorge Soler nor Marcell Ozuna can be trusted defensively in the outfield, and at least one of them is likely to be moved this offseason. Additionally, there’s still uncertainty around Ronald Acuña Jr.’s injury status and when he’ll be cleared to return to the outfield. On top of that, left field was a constant struggle for the Braves until they brought in Ramon Laureano, as the Jarred Kelenic experiment and Adam Duvall’s return didn’t pan out as hoped.

The need for outfield reinforcements is clear, but Rooker does come with defensive concerns. He’s primarily served as a designated hitter and has consistently rated poorly when playing the field. While his offensive prowess is undeniable, it’s possible that Anthopoulos will prioritize outfielders who bring more defensive reliability.

The Braves have options, but Rooker’s powerful bat could be tough to pass up. Anthopoulos will have to decide whether his impact at the plate outweighs his defensive limitations. Either way, adding another reliable outfielder will be a top priority if the Braves hope to contend in 2025.
