Why a Donovan Mitchell contract extension benefits the Hawks

The Hawks are expected to trade one of their All-Stars in Trae Young or Dejounte Murray, who will be hot commodities for any team looking for a point guard this offseason.

That demand could grow too if the Cavaliers sign Donovan Mitchell to a contract extension and keep the backcourt duo of Mitchell and Darius Garland together, which looks to be the case as far as Michael Scotto is concerned.

Several rival executives believe Donovan Mitchell will sign an extension with Cleveland. The belief is Mitchell, who just completed his seventh season, will sign a max extension for at least the next three seasons,” Scotto said.

A lot of clubs that have been mentioned as possible trade suitors for Murray and Young are also included in the sweepstakes for Mitchell and Garland, but Scotto seems to think Cleveland wants to keep the backcourt duo together.

“Cleveland has continued to tell teams they’re not trying to move Darius Garland and Jarrett Allen, league sources told HoopsHype,” Scotto said.

So, if the Lakers, Spurs, Pelicans, and any other club looking for a ball-dominant guard this offseason are turned away by the Cavaliers, the Hawks might be able to benefit from the surplus of demand and scarcity of supply.

Of course, a lot of this can change on a dime, especially considering the Hawks’ reluctance to move Dejounte Murray at the trade deadline and the Cavs’ potential retooling of their roster.

Still, at this juncture, it seems the Hawks will be in a position of strength when it comes to trade negotiations this offseason. That will grow exponentially if the Cavaliers hang onto Donovan Mitchell and Darius Garland.
