Former Braves first-round pick Braden Shewmake was just designated for assignment by the White Sox.
The DFA came by way of Chicago having to make room for Tyler Gilbert on their 40-man roster. Shewmake, who was originally picked in the first round of the 2019 draft, eventually made his major league debut in 2023 with the Braves, but he only appeared in two games.
Eventually, Shewmake was traded to the White Sox in a six-player deal that brought Aaron Bummer to Atlanta. In Chicago, Shewmake dealt with injuries and was limited to just 39 games between Triple-A and the majors.
Even in that short period, he struggled, slashing .125/.134/.203 — good for a -15 wRC+ — in 67 trips to the plate at the major league level.
Now, the White Sox will have one week to waive or trade Braden Shewmake, and if the former Braves first-rounder clears waivers, Chicago will have the opportunity to outright him to the minors.
