Following their most recent trade, the Braves have a couple of open 40-man roster spots — 38 to be exact. They could also get an extra spot by moving on from Jake Odorizzi. Regardless, they will need to choose which minor league players to protect by November 15th. Matt Chrietzberg has a pretty good breakdown of what could happen with Atlanta leading up to the Rule 5 Draft:
Darius Vines
Victor Vodnik
Braden Shewmake

I agree with these, and there’s a few ways for the Braves to open up even more roster spots they might need. They could outright guys who are out of options like Silvino Bracho and Rylan Bannon. They could also make a trade, potentially in the form of Eddie Rosario or Marcell Ozuna if Anthopoulos can pull off a miracle. It would be a surprise if they left someone like Shewmake unprotected, but I wouldn’t be too shocked with how disappointing he has been.
We’ll see what Alex Anthopoulos has in store, but the Braves have a lot of work to do in the coming days.
