What more does Arthur Blank need to see to be convinced the Falcons don’t have the right guys in positions of power?
Yes, last night’s abomination was the final nail in Raheem Morris’ young head coach coffin. The poor clock management was just a microcosm of the job he’s done since arriving back in Atlanta, dating back to the inexcusable loss to the Saints following the firing of Dennis Allen.
That loss was the start of a four-game skid that effectively gave the division to the Buccaneers. Morris has regularly been out-coached, has had multiple instances in which his team didn’t get off the bus, stuck with Kirk Cousins for far too long, and this is all from a head coach that has 74 games under his belt.
There’s absolutely no way Arthur Blank is convinced this is the regime that’s capable of capturing the franchise’s first Super Bowl title, and that doesn’t just mean Raheem Morris. This is the perfect opportunity to clean house.
It’s never the wrong time to make the right decision. Raheem Morris has already won more games in his first season than Arthur Smith did in three years, but let’s contextualize each situation. Smith never had a roster this talented and never had the kind of investment in the quarterback position Morris did. Smith was a first-time head coach and was given a proper leash; this isn’t Morris’ first rodeo. He’s making first-time head coach mistakes as a guy who has been a head coach for multiple seasons.
This season has been an utter failure, and there’s no sugarcoating it. Coming into the year, Raheem Morris, Terry Fontenot, and Arthur Blank staked their claim to the NFC South, which they fumbled away to the Buccaneers, who even tried to give it back with a loss to the Cowboys. Now, they’re likely to miss the postseason.
I’m not even mentioning the butchered Kirk Cousins contract or the reported belief from the Falcons that the veteran’s career is as good as done.
This isn’t just a Raheem Morris issue. Arthur Blank needs to clean house. The Falcons don’t have the general manager and head coach necessary to get this team to the top of the mountain, and they’re only delaying the inevitable.
