They say when one door closes, another one opens, and that’s exactly what is happening in Atlanta right now. The injury bug continues to plague the Braves, as Orlando Arcia has become the latest member to hit the IL after suffering a micro-fracture in his wrist. The veteran has been one of the team’s best players — both offensively and defensively — since winning the starting shortstop job out of Spring Training. His absence will be felt, but it does allow the Braves to get a longer look at Vaughn Grissom, who has been tearing the cover off the ball in Gwinnett.
The 22-year-old was expected to start at shortstop to begin the season, but concerns surrounding his defense led to the Braves opting to roll with Orlando Arcia. However, that’s not really a knock on Grissom. They still believe he’s the future at the position, and now, he has an opportunity to prove he belongs in the majors.
With that being said, Arcia has been fantastic. He’s shown he’s capable and deserving of a starting role, so what happens if Vaughn Grissom has success and Arcia returns? Who starts at shortstop? Or might the Braves have a different plan for Grissom this season?
On the latest episode of SportsTalkATL, we discuss the possibilities for Vaughn Grissom and what’s most likely to happen when Arcia returns.
