The Falcons fell to the Saints in Week 10, and it was capped off by a Kirk Cousins‘ fourth-down pass that was well short of the sticks.
It was the cherry on top of a disappointing loss that will be remembered for all of the missed opportunities. However, Vikings fans will remember it for something much different.
It marked the first moment that Kirk Cousins did a Kirk Cousins thing. I even mentioned it following the play that a Minnesota fan warned Falcons fans about this moment.

The Viking Age even highlighted the blunder:
“If this sounds familiar, that’s because Vikings fans have seen this before. Cousins faced a similar scenario in a 2022 NFC Wild Card Game against New York and faced a 4th-and-8 with the Vikings looking for a game-tying score. While Jefferson was double-teamed downfield, Cousins elected to check down to T.J. Hockenson, who was woefully short of the first down to end the game.”
Of course, the Falcons weren’t going to beat the Saints, and there wasn’t any other choice that could potentially get out of bounds, but the sentiment is the Vikings know how this story ends because they’ve lived it six years in a row.
Any Falcons fan dreaming of Kirk Cousins leading us to the Super Bowl hasn’t watched his career closely enough. He’s a good quarterback that needs perfect circumstances to succeed. It’s not impossible, just improbable.
What’s most likely is that Kirk Cousins and the Falcons will fall short in some heartbreaking manner because they’re Kirk Cousins and the Falcons. Anything less wouldn’t be quite right.
