Troy Aikman: Falcons QB Kirk Cousins says he’s “not 100%”

NFL: SEP 08 Steelers at Falcons

Prior to the Falcons Monday Night Football contest with the Eagles in Philadelphia, Troy Aikman provided some disturbing information about Kirk Cousins. According to the ESPN pundit, Cousins told him that he’s not 100% but feels 100% in the pocket.

The Falcons gave a 36-year-old coming off an Achilles injury $180 million with $100 million guaranteed, and the hope was that he would be fully healthy by the start of the season. However, he looked anything but healthy in Week 1 against the Steelers.

Cousins was never a mobile quarterback, but it seemed quite obvious from where I sit that he wasn’t 100%. On the Kyle Pitts touchdown to end the first half, Cousins did escape the pocket to extend the play; however, for the rest of the game, he was a statue in the pocket.

The Falcons came out and said that keeping Cousins in the shotgun and the pistol with no play action passes was completely a part of the plan and had nothing to do with his health. Zac Robinson admitted as much.

But if I’m just trusting my eyes, I’d say he’s not 100%, and I seriously doubt that Troy Aikman is just making this up. I imagine Cousins is probably still learning to trust his Achilles. It might be structurally healthy, in terms of the medical staff clearing him, but athletes recovering from ACLs, Achilles, etc. have to learn to trust their bodies again.

We will learn a lot about this Falcons team as a whole tonight against the Eagles, but we will also learn what Kirk Cousins can really do too.
