The Mavericks and Hawks, whether people like it or not, will always be compared on talk shows and social media because the 2018 NBA draft will forever be associated with the trade that sent the Atlanta Hawks‘ first-round pick, Luka Doncic, to the Dallas Mavericks in exchange for their first-round pick, Trae Young, and an additional first-round selection.
- Mavericks receive: Luka Doncic (No. 3 overall selection in 2018 NBA Draft)
- Hawks receive: Trae Young (No. 5 overall selection in 2018 NBA Draft); Protected 2019 first-round pick
That protected first-round pick turned into Cam Reddish when the Hawks selected him tenth overall. Luka and Trae have spoken many times, and the two are friends who only want what is best for each other. Though they’re fierce competitors, they aren’t directly competing with each other; in fact, Young reiterated on HBO’s The Shop that he’s competing with Allen Iverson, Steve Nash, and Chris Paul — not Luka.

Young isn’t concerned with his peers; he’s chasing greatness. As the great Rayford Young once said, “The great ones always the greats that came before them.”
