Trae Young, Dejounte Murray ‘destined to part ways’ with Pelicans looming as destination

NBA: APR 17 Play In East Hawks at Bulls

Everything, in regards to the Hawks, is revolving around the NBA Draft, but there are even bigger decisions looming.

One of Atlanta’s All-Star point guards will likely be on the move this offseason. One media pundit described the notion that Trae Young or Dejounte Murray will be traded as destiny.

“They simultaneously have decisions to make with players already on their roster, especially Trae Young and Dejounte Murray, who seem destined to part ways in the not-too-distant future,” Jonathan Givony of ESPN writes.

Trae Young and Dejounte Muray are both killers. They’re fully capable of helping a club towards a championship and provide different skill sets that any team would be lucky to have. The only issue with that is they’re not good together.

The sample size is big enough to know the duo isn’t a good fit. They don’t bring out the best in one another, and it seems obvious that a trade is inevitable. The Hawks have a significant decision looming, and one factor that should dictate which All-Star they build around is the trade market. Givony believes a deal could surround Brandon Ingram with the Pelicans as a potential destination for either Murray or Young.

“The New Orleans Pelicans loom as a potential destination for one of them, with Brandon Ingram the most attractive and attainable target on the Pels’ roster,” the ESPN pundit writes.

Most deals for Trae Young or Dejounte Murray center around a deal for Brandon Ingram because it makes sense on paper. The Pels need a point guard to maximize Zion Williamson while C.J. McCollum could move to the 2 position. And the Hawks could use more scoring on the wing.

I have my reservations because assuming a deal involves Murray and Ingram, Atlanta would give New Orleans a player under contract for several years at a team-friendly rate while acquiring Ingram on an expiring deal and looking for maximum contract money.
