By 4 pm on Tuesday, the Falcons will have cut down the roster to 53 players, as will the rest of the NFL.
It’s the perfect time for clubs like the Falcons to scoop up unwanted veterans to fill positions of need. Taylor Heinicke may be in that position for Atlanta. He’s expendable, and the Falcons could potentially entice a quarterback-needy team to trade a Day 3 draft pick for a backup signal caller.
In that same breath, there are expendable players on other rosters that should interest the Falcons, and one of them is Tutu Atwell.
The Rams have Cooper Kupp, Puka Nacua, and Demarcus Robinson as their starts with Xavier Smith and Jordan Whittington firmly entrenched in the backup spots behind them. Atwell was a second-round pick last season, starting 14 games as a rookie, but the opportunities began to wane off down the stretch.
The Falcons could offer the Rams a late Day 2 draft pick for Atwell’s services, though the role may already be filled with Ray-Ray McCloud. Zac Robinson and Raheem Morris are familiar with Tutu Atwell, so there’s a connection there.
The Rams aren’t in a dire position to trade him, so the Falcons would likely have to trade a decently valuable draft pick to pry him out of Los Angeles. With Darnell Mooney and Drake London being the only (somewhat) proven commodities on the roster, the Falcons may not have a better chance to add a pass catcher of Atwell’s quality.
They’ve been looking for a burner that can take the top off of the defense for as long as I can remember; Tutu Atwell may be their best chance to do so.
