Don’t look now, but the Falcons are only one game out of a playoff spot.
Looking at these standings. The falcons legitimately may be in a 3 team race for the rest of the year for those last 2 playoff spots. Because I don’t see the teams beneath us turning it around or maybe 1. pic.twitter.com/QMXSqUIAtN

This week, the Falcons will match up with a Panthers squad that has lost four straight, including an ugly 25-3 loss to the Giants last Sunday.
Trailing 15-3 in the fourth quarter, the #Panthers have benched Sam Darnold and replaced him with PJ Walker.

Matt Rhule says Sam Darnold will start next week and going forward.

Regardless, Darnold has cooled off after his incredibly hot start. Over their last four losses:
@ Cowboys: 66% CMP, 301 yards, 2 TD, 2 INT
v. Eagles: 56% CMP, 177 yards, 1 TD, 3 INT
v. Vikings: 41% CMP, 207 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT
@ Giants: 64% CMP, 111 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT
Overall, Darnold has fumbled five times and thrown eight picks this season. Not to mention, the Panthers will be without Christian McCaffrey, undoubtedly their best player. I still think Carolina is a well-coached team with a very talented defense, but now is the time for the Falcons to make a statement. Last week marked the first time the Falcons were at or above .500 since September 15th of 2019. With the playoffs somehow within grasp of Atlanta this early in the season, this is a game they must win to stay on track.
