Get used to it, from now until April, the Falcons are going to be a trendy team in quarterback discussions in the upcoming draft. Personally, I like a few guys so far; and Drake Maye out of North Carolina may be my favorite. However, Maye is probably going to be taken in the top three of the draft, so if he’s not available; who should the Falcons target? Keith Sanchez of TheDraftNetwork thinks Michigan quarterback JJ McCarthy is in play with the Falcons selecting 11th overall:
J.J. McCarthy QB, Michigan
The Falcons have the offensive weapons on the outside, but they need a consistent quarterback to get them the football. With this pick, they select J.J. McCarthy, a quarterback who is athletic and has shown that can make all the throws consistently.
I agree with the assessment. For starters, if the Falcons are picking 11th overall, they better be taking a quarterback. This would mean they missed the playoffs, and the blame would fall squarely on Desmond Ridder’s shoulders. McCarthy runs a similar style of offense at Michigan. He’s in a run-heavy scheme with lots of play action. He puts a lot of zip on the ball and can make true “NFL throws.” He’s not a perfect prospect by any means, but he has a ton of experience and is a proven winner at Michigan. He’ll need a bit of time to develop, especially when it comes to processing speed and touch, but he has the makeup of a big-time NFL quarterback.
We have a ways to go until the 2024 draft, but I wouldn’t be shocked if we’re having a conversation about McCarthy and the Falcons around that time.
