Surprisingly, the Red Sox have designated SS Jeter Downs for Assignment. Downs was one of the centerpieces of the trade that sent Mookie Betts to the Dodgers.
The Red Sox have DFA'd Jeter Downs, who was acquired in the 2020 deal for Mookie Betts.

Downs has lost a lot of his shine, but he’s only 23 years old and has 14 MLB games under his belt. Last year in AAA, Downs hit .197 but still managed a respectable .728 OPS thanks to his ability to get on base and gap to gap power. Downs had 11 doubles, a triple, 16 home runs, and 38 walks. Not to mention, he stole 18 bases, so he’s a speed threat on the bases as well.
I’m nowhere near suggesting the Braves promote Downs to the majors to replace Dansby Swanson, but when you’re a team that has almost nothing in terms of a farm system, these are the types of guys you take chances on.
