Riding high, the Falcons came into their Week 7 contest against the Seahawks winners of three straight, while their opponents were on a three-game skid.
On Sunday, Seattle gave Atlanta a much-needed reality check. The Falcons didn’t just lose; they lost in convincing fashion. The Seahawks dominated on Sunday.
The offense never found its groove and went away from the run, on top of Kirk Cousins, who made several significant mistakes. But more than anything, the defense was completely outmatched.
As has been the consistent theme of Jimmy Lake’s unit, the Falcons weren’t able to stop the run at all. And even though they recorded three sacks, it seemed like Atlanta wasn’t able to get consistent pressure. Geno Smith diced up Atlanta’s secondary, and it was a rough day all around for that side of the ball.
However, a lot of these issues aren’t new. These have lingered for the entire season but haven’t had the light shined upon them like they were on Sunday. Winners of three straight, with a chance to extend that streak to four and take a potentially commanding lead in the division, there was an air of confidence around Flowery Branch.
The only issue? The Falcons weren’t that good. Are they a playoff team? Yes, at this point in the season, but they are flawed, and those flaws could prove fatal to Raheem Morris’ team if they don’t figure them out.
It’s only Week 7, so the Falcons have plenty of time to evolve, and the NFL trade deadline is going to be a hot topic among fans, but I wouldn’t put all of my eggs in that basket.
