The NBA Draft is a couple of days away, and the rumor mill is flowing at maximum capacity for the Hawks and their No. 1 overall pick.
To recap, it seems Atlanta is down to two prospects — Zaccharie Risacher and Donovan Clingan — as Jonathan Givony reported before the weekend, with Alex Sarr going No. 2 to the Wizards seen as a lock.
However, as owners of the top pick in the draft, the Hawks have all of the power. If they view Sarr as the best prospect, he should be the selection. While his camp is seemingly avoiding the Hawks at all costs, it could present an opportunity for Landry Fields to trade down.
There have been rumors about the Hawks moving down to No. 4 in a deal with the Spurs, but those have cooled in the last week or so until Marc Stein reported that those rumblings haven’t gone away.
“Rumbles about San Antonio interest in jumping up from No. 4 to No. 1 by constructing a trade with the Hawks haven’t gone away,” The Stein Line’s Marc Stein wrote over the weekend.
The Hawks would be wise to move down the board if an opportunity like this presented itself because if Landry Fields is set on Donovan Clingan, there’s a great chance that he’ll be available at No. 4.
That way, Atlanta will land the prospect they wanted in the first place while also restocking their war chest with some first-round picks, hopefully, the 2025 first-rounder that the Spurs received in part of the Dejounte Murray trade.
I expect many more rumors and reports to surface regarding a prospective deal in the coming days.
