Report: The Falcons made this trade offer for Montez Sweat

NFL: OCT 01 Commanders at Eagles

We’ve gotten reports the Falcons are looking t0 buy at the trade deadline, and Mike Florio of PFT says they’re looking to acquire Montez Sweat from the Washington Commanders. Jay Glazer says the Commanders will trade “at least” one of their premiere defensive linemen at this trade deadline. Here’s what Florio had to say about the Falcons:

As the trade deadline approaches and talk increases of a potential trade by the Commanders of pass rusher Montez Sweat and/or pass rusher Chase Young, there’s one team ready to make a move on Sweat.

Per a league source, the Falcons have offered a third-round pick for Sweat.

That’s not yet enough to get the Commanders to do the deal. And whether he’s traded before Tuesday will depend in part on whether the Commanders win or lose on Sunday against the Eagles.

Even with a loss, it will be difficult for the current football operation to give up Sweat and/or Young, as they try to win games. If they can get the kind of a return that will be impressive to new owner Josh Harris, maybe they will.

This would be a fantastic trade for the Falcons. Sweat is a franchise-type pass rusher and would make a great defense even more imposing. At 27 years old, Sweat has 5.5 sacks in 2023. The Falcons would have to extend him, who is an impending free agent, but he went to high school in Stone Mountain. He could embrace a homecoming. The Falcons have the cap space and draft picks to make a deal happen, so hopefully the Eagles get a win on Sunday.
