In a bit of surprising news, the Braves appear to be close to acquiring Sean Murphy from the Athletics. With Atlanta’s surplus of catchers, I’m not sure what this move is going to look like. However, Mark Feinsand is reporting the Braves are close to a deal:
The Athletics appear to be getting close to a trade of C Sean Murphy, per source. The Braves are considered the frontrunners to acquire the former Gold Glove winner, though other teams remain in the mix.

Regardless of who the Braves already have at the position, Murphy is a premium talent that would give Atlanta one of the better defensive backstops in the league. Murphy also posted a .756 OPS last season, which is really good for the position. The Braves already have Travis d’Arnaud, Manny Piña, and William Contreras. Contreras may be part of the deal, but he could also play left field in a pinch. We’ll see what this trade looks like, if the Matt Olson deal is any indication, the A’s will be getting a haul in return if this gets done.
UPDATE:
Feinsand is now reporting the Braves are out of the running for Murphy:
Update on Sean Murphy: it still appears Oakland is close to a trade, but the Braves are NOT going to be the acquiring team, per source. The Cardinals, Rays, Guardians and Red Sox are among the teams that have been connected to Murphy in recent weeks.
