In a little over a week, the Hawks will make a franchise-altering decision with the No. 1 overall pick.
At this point, it seems three prospects are in the running to be Atlanta’s top selection — Donovan Clingan, Zaccharie Risacher, and Alex Sarr. The former two of which have been described as the Hawks’ top two prospects by other NBA executives, according to Brett Siegel. However, there’s always the possibility that Landry Fields trades out of the top spot.
“A handful of teams have expressed interest in the Hawks’ first overall selection, sources said, with some already speaking directly with the organization about what it would take,” Siegel said.
He did add that the Hawks appear to be keeping the first pick in order to select their guy, which correlates with the Hawks GM’s most recent words.
“I think we’re really excited by the draft,” Fields said Monday, via ESPN. “And the more that we uncover, like we go, great, I’m glad we have No. 1. I keep joking around like I’m not giving it back. So, I think we’re in a really good position here. I’m excited about it, frankly.”
The Hawks aren’t in a position to take the phone off the hook. The organization needs to leave no stone unturned. It’s clear Fields is taking that approach but is leaning towards standing pat despite taking calls.
“We as a group looked at a ton of different scenarios,” Fields said. “Like if you keep the pick, you try to get back into the draft. … With where we are right now, we’ll pick one. … We’re planning on picking one.”
