Report: Jim Harbaugh still very interested in Falcons job

COLLEGE FOOTBALL: JAN 08 CFP National Championship Michigan vs Washington

The Atlanta Falcons search for their next head coach has taken so many turns it’s almost impossible to keep up with. At the moment, it still seems like Bill Belichick should be viewed as the frontrunner. And yesterday, it appeared Jim Harbaugh was about to be out of the mix as reports suggested he was closing in on a deal to become the next head coach of the Los Angeles Chargers.

However, longtime NFL insider Chris Mortensen is reporting that it is not yet a done deal, and that Jim Harbaugh still has heavy interest in the Atlanta Falcons job opening.

The Chargers still appear to be the frontrunner. Bleacher Report’s Jordan Schultz is reporting that they remain in talks on a deal; however, Harbaugh does have an interview scheduled with the Falcons today.

This has to be exciting for Falcons fans. There’s always the chance that Harbaugh is doing all of this for leverage purposes, but the Falcons are a very attractive job opening.

Atlanta’s defense made significant strides this season. The offense is ripe with weapons at the skill positions, featuring one of the best offensive lines in the league. The Falcons also have all of their draft picks and plenty of cap space. Jim Harbaugh knows how to put together a team that can win at every level, and unlike the Chargers, who are way over the cap with little room to maneuver, the Falcons offer him an opportunity to come in and make whatever moves he sees fit.

If I’m Arthur Blank, and Jim Harbaugh is really interested in the job, I’m pulling out all the stops to make him reconsider Los Angeles. The weather is great there and Justin Herbert is one of the best quarterbacks in the game, but Harbaugh has made it known through this process that he wants to be at a place where he is wanted. Arthur Blank has the opportunity to sell him on that in this second interview.

Update: Josh Kendall of The Athletic reports the Falcons will not interview Jim Harbaugh today. However, there could be a second interview in the future.
