According to Chris Kirschner, the Hawks were preparing to make a push for Kevin Durant before acquiring Dejounte Murray:
Hawks Were Preparing Offer To Nets For Kevin Durant Before Dejounte Murray Trade https://t.co/Ad2yUPNGRY

This isn’t a huge surprise, as there was a reported rift between the Nets, Kyrie Irving, and Durant. With Irving re-committing to the Nets, you have to imagine Durant is as well. This is what RealGM had to say about a possible Durant trade:
Like many other teams around the NBA, the Hawks were seriously preparing for the possibility that Durant might ask for a trade if Kyrie Irving would have left in free agency. When Irving decided to opt in for his $36.5 million contract for 22-23, the Hawks were able to move forward with the Murray trade.
With the Hawks sending out multiple future first round picks to the Spurs for Murray, their ability to make a trade for the star like Durant now becomes a practical impossibility.
I’m not so sure Durant is even on his way out of town with Kyrie Irving choosing to opt-in to his contract, but if he is, I still think the Hawks have an outside shot. I’m happy with Dejounte Murray, but adding a star like Kevin Durant would have been arguably the greatest moment in Atlanta Hawks basketball history.
