Jason Butt of The Athletic reported today that the Falcons plan to tender Younghoe Koo, keeping him for the 2020 season. Atlanta went into last year not knowing what to expect out of the kicker position. Giorgio Taveccio, who was promising as Matt Bryant’s replacement in 2018, faltered and lost his job before the season started. Feeling pressure from the fan base, the Falcons turned back to the veteran Bryant, which also failed miserably.
Finally, the team settled on Younhoe Koo – a former Georgia Southern Eagle that went on to make 23 of his 26 field goals and 15 of 16 extra points for Atlanta. He also proved to be a maestro when it came to onside kicks. Still just 25 years old, it was only a matter of time before the Falcons made this decision, but Butt also said the team plans to bring in competition, so they won’t have to worry about finding a kicker in the middle of the season again. There are several quality legs coming out of college in this year’s draft, but given the high number of needs the Falcons must address, I’m not sure they’re going to want to use a pick on a kicker when they already have a pretty damn good one on the roster.
