The Falcons made a similar cap-saving move to the release of Josh Harris by releasing Brandon Copeland on Saturday. Still, apparently, he will be back with the team shortly, according to Adam Caplan:
#Falcons are expected to re-sign veteran OLB Brandon Copeland as soon as today, source said. He was released on Saturday.

So you pay the player for the week and then release him a day or two before the first game. They will then re-sign him next week but that guarantee is different and only covers a full week not the full season (3/?)

As stated, this was a move to save some money for the season, but Copeland was only on a one-year, $990k deal. With the Falcons only getting to Jalen Hurts once yesterday, you can make the argument that the money wasn’t worth an already thin pass rush taking another hit. Regardless, it appears Copeland will be back as early as today. Atlanta is going to need him against Tampa Bay and Tom Brady.
