At this point, Bill Belichick seems to be the frontrunner for the Falcons’ open head coaching job, but that may not be the case for long.
According to Mike Florio, “Multiple teams are quietly considering a potential run at Belichick.” The insider added that one currently has a head coach vacancy while the other does not.
I’ve had this thought a couple of times — Why are the Falcons the only team to pursue eight-time Super Bowl champion Bill Belichick?
Florio seems to think that’s not the case. Before this report that a couple of teams are considering a run at Belichick, he reported that the former Patriots’ head coach had turned some teams away.
According to Florio, there’s “belief in some league circles” that the Eagles and Cowboys expressed interest in Belichick, that he “didn’t reciprocate,” forcing Dallas and Philadelphia to stick with their current coaches.
I’ve said it before and it’s only become more true. If it looks like a duck, swims like a duck, and quacks like a duck, then it probably is a duck. Bill Belichick has been connected to the Falcons since even before Arthur Smith was fired. Some insiders have even said they would be surprised if he wasn’t named the next head coach in Atlanta.
Arthur Blank is clearly enamored with the idea of bringing in the architect of The Patriot Way. He’s 81 years old and isn’t getting any younger. He’s desperate, which is why he’s “all-in” on Bill Belichick, according to CBS Sports’ Jonathan Jones.
“But a source familiar with Belichick told CBS Sports Blank “desperately” wants Belichick and that it’s ultimately Belichick’s job if he wants it,” Jones writes.
If Florio’s report is correct and other clubs are pursuing Bill Belichick, Blank could be forced to up his offer. It wouldn’t be another zero, but rather more power within the organization, which could spell bad news for Rich McKay and Terry Fontenot.
