By the time of this writing, the Falcons haven’t even taken the field in their Week 18 matchup against the Saints; however, Atlanta’s biggest offseason question already has an answer. According to Chris Mortensen, Matt Ryan will be Arthur Smith’s quarterback in 2022.
Anyone trying to move Matt Ryan to Pittsburgh as Ben Roethlisberger’s successor can put that speculation to rest.
Falcons coach Arthur Smith wanted Ryan to return when he took the job & he has made it clear to owner Arthur Blank and GM Terry Fontenot that Ryan is his QB for 2022— Chris Mortensen (@mortreport) January 9, 2022
The imminent and rampant speculation about Ryan’s status with the Falcons has been grounded before it ever really took off. Smith came to Atlanta with high praise for Ryan, and it’s clear those sentiments were genuine. The first-year head coach has his guy.
This gives the Falcons an immediate direction, which is to continue to compete in hopes of making the playoffs. Eventually, it’ll be time for Falcons fans to say goodbye to the veteran quarterback, but this year certainly won’t be his last in Atlanta.
