In a report that should surprise nobody, the Falcons called the 49ers about a Trey Lance trade before he was shipped to Dallas:

This shouldn’t come as a shock considering the Falcons were apparently smitten with Lance before the 2021 NFL Draft. Of course, the 49ers jumped Atlanta and grabbed Lance, giving up a boatload of picks in the process.
The 49ers are cutting their losses; they named Sam Darnold the backup quarterback behind Brock Purdy, and Lance was left without a role. Lance’s issue is clear, he simply hasn’t played a lot of football and has no way to play more football right now. Lance has gotten roughly 500 snaps of competitive football since high school.
The Falcons have Desmond Ridder under center, and it’s to be determined if he’s going to be a franchise quarterback. They also have Taylor Heinicke to back him up. The Falcons don’t need another quarterback, but I doubt those feelings for Lance went away overnight.
It’s not confirmed if Atlanta made an offer, and if they did, it was probably less than the fourth-round pick the 49ers got from Dallas. The 49ers got an awful return on their investment, but it’s yet to be seen if Dallas’s roll of the dice will be worth it in the end.
