The NBA trade deadline is a mere hours away, and the Hawks are at the center of plenty of rumors, surrounding players like Bogdan Bogdanovic, Clint Capela, and De’Andre Hunter.

It seems there’s a possibility that all three will be moved by the deadline, and the Cavaliers have emerged as the frontrunner for Hunter, according to Chris Mannix. This comes a day after Mike Scotto of Hoops Hype reported of the Cavs interest in Hunter.

“The Hawks have explored the trade market on veterans Clint Capela and Bogdan Bogdanovic, as previously reported by HoopsHype. Hawks forward De’Andre Hunter has also drawn trade interest from the Cleveland Cavaliers, league sources told HoopsHype.”

The former fourth overall pick is finally putting it all together this season. He’s amid the best year of his career, averaging 19 points per game on 46.1% shooting from the field and 39.3% from deep.

After transitioning to a bench role, he’s clearly found a niche and is making a case for the Sixth Man of the Year award. The Hawks would be doing something much different than they’ve done in years past — selling high on an asset.

Whether it was John Collins, Kevin Huerter, Dejounte Murray or any other asset, the Hawks have generally held on too long. De’Andre Hunter has never been more valuable than he is right now. He would certainly command a healthy trade package in return, but the Hawks have to ask themselves a very important question: Is this version of De’Andre Hunter here to stay?

I’m glad I don’t have to make that decision because, let’s face it, Hunter has struggled to stay healthy. He has only played more than 60 games twice in the previous five seasons. Of course, Hunter could be turning a corner and put the injuries behind him. There’s a case to be made either way.
