Terry Fontenot has leaned on his relationships in the past when acquiring players for the Falcons.
In some instances, the club has been connected to David Onyemata, Kaden Elliss, Cordarrelle Patterson, and other pro personnel acquisitions. I don’t expect that to change with a new coaching staff.
Raheem Morris, Jimmy Lake, and Zac Robinson will lean on their relationships from Los Angeles and other stops along their coaching journey. So, let’s take a look at some Rams free agents that could potentially interest the Falcons.
S Jordan Fuller
Richie Grant was supplanted by rookie seventh-round pick DeMarcco Hellams, so it’s unclear how Morris and Lake feel about the safety position. Fuller has started 46 games over four seasons with the Rams, showing chops against the pass and run. He’s only 26 years old and won’t break the bank. The Falcons should spin the tires on a deal if Hellams and Grant aren’t in the plans.
S John Johnson
Johnson was once heralded among the best safeties in football, starting eight games last season but appearing in all 17. At this point in his career, he might be a fringe starter or a third safety in some systems. If the Falcons want Johnson to be a starter, I don’t know how wise that would be.
CB Akhello Witherspoon
The Falcons cornerback room is similarly confusing as the safety room. Is the plan to start two of Clark Phillips, Dee Alford, and Mike Hughes with A.J. Terrell? Witherspoon could be expected to be a somewhat reliable option opposite of Terrell, but the Falcons shouldn’t be satisfied with half measures at such a premium position.
DE Jonah Williams
Williams might not even hit the open market because he’s a restricted free agent, but the Falcons could use the plus run defender as a valuable depth piece.
