Raheem Morris not shying away from first-year expectations for Falcons

NFL: JAN 23 NFC Divisional Round Rams at Buccaneers

Arthur Blank wants to win right now, but it didn’t matter if the Falcons hired the greatest coach of all time or the next offensive guru.

That was a driving factor in Blank’s desire to bring in Belichick. At 82 years old, the club’s owner no longer has the time he once did to let a new regime sink its teeth into the organization.

With Belichick, the thought process was that the team, which possesses a talented yet underachieving roster that many consider to be a quarterback away, could compete immediately.

The Falcons endured painful seasons in Arthur Smith’s first two years as Terry Fontenot worked to clean up the salary cap. Last offseason, Fontenot and Smith were able to reap the benefits by spending gobs of cash in free agency, dramatically improving the roster.

While Smith fell short of expectations in 2023, resulting in his termination, the roster is still in good shape. With a few more free agent additions, another impactful draft class, and an upgrade at the quarterback position, the Falcons should be able to satisfy Arthur Blank and the fans’ desire to compete.

Raheem Morris isn’t shying away from expectations either. In a breath of fresh air, the new Falcons head coach directly acknowledged the goal ahead of the 2024 campaign.

Unlike his predecessor, Morris is inheriting a good roster that he and Fontenot will work to refine even more. Anything less than what Smith did last year will be considered a disappointment.

While spirits are high as Raheem Morris wins over the fan base, it can change in the blink of an eye if the results don’t come to fruition.
