Raheem Morris comments on fans calling for Michael Penix Jr.

Michael Penix Jr

Quarterback controversy is the top storyline surrounding the Falcons heading into Week 14, which is never a good thing for a team that is tied atop the division and controls its own destiny to get to the playoffs. But Raheem Morris and company had to know this was coming if Kirk Cousins struggled, and he has to the tune of no touchdowns and six interceptions over the last three games, resulting in three straight losses.

Despite the noise, Morris has been unwavering in his belief in the 13-year veteran quarterback throughout the week. He’s stated on multiple occasions that there has been no discussion about turning to Michael Penix, even if he understands the calls from fans for the rookie.

“I get the excitement. I drafted Penix,” Morris said on 92.9 The Game’s Duke and Bell.

It’s only seven words, but that second sentence I find extremely intriguing. It shows how heavily involved Morris was in the decision to take Michael Penix Jr. 8th overall a mere weeks after signing Kirk Cousins to a $180 million contract. Morris and Penix are attached at the hip in a sense, as Morris’ tenure in Atlanta will ultimately be decided by Penix’s success.

What happens this year is rather irrelevant. The Falcons — with Kirk Cousins or Michael Penix — aren’t going to contend for a Super Bowl. They might not even make the playoffs, and if that becomes even more evident with a fourth consecutive loss on Sunday, it would behoove Morris to get Penix as much experience as possible before next season. Because if Penix doesn’t get any action this year and struggles next season, Morris’ tenure as Falcons head coach might be short-lived.
