Offseason checkpoints to monitor in the Falcons, Kirk Cousins saga

The Falcons and Kirk Cousins have three checkpoints to monitor, according to NFL insider Albert Breer.

The first was last Sunday when a $10 million roster bonus became fully guaranteed. The next two checkpoints are the NFL Draft (April 24-26) and in late July, which is the start of training camp.

“Draft weekend, which is the next point that quarterbacking seats will fill up. A team or two would officially take itself out of the market for Cousins. And maybe a team or two would be left desperate for a quarterback of his caliber, if it came out of the first day of the draft without a viable starter,” Breer wrote.

The NFL Draft could be a massive turning point for the Falcons and their hopes of trading Kirk Cousins. After the music cuts off, whichever club is left standing will be in a position that the Falcons can exploit.

“The start of training camp. Cousins doesn’t plan on showing for the offseason program (he may show for mandatory minicamp to avoid taking the fines). So camp is when things could get more uncomfortable. Would this be a situation such as Jimmy Garoppolo’s in the summer of 2022? It’s tough to say. But there’d definitely be some awkwardness. There also could end up being injuries elsewhere that create movement,” Breer continued.

This is news. Cousins doesn’t plan on showing up to anything that isn’t mandatory. Though it’s not exactly surprising, it’s notable. I’d be shocked if he took on fines by sitting out of mandatory minicamp. We all know what they say about Kirk Cousins and his money.

The Falcons and Kirk Cousins would surely hope to have this situation resolved as soon as possible. Atlanta wants to move on to Michael Penix, and Cousins is just a distraction for that goal. Moreover, the veteran quarterback wants to put the entire Falcons debacle behind him and move on to greener pastures.

Both want the same thing, but both will have to wait.
