Following three straight losses, the Braves finished off their series in Cincinnati with back-to-back wins in which their offense exploded for 22 combined runs. That’s the kind of rollercoaster year it’s been for Atlanta. Every time they take a step forward, it’s followed by two steps back, and vice versa.
However, despite the back-to-back wins, the Braves didn’t make up any ground up in the Wild Card standings, with both the Mets and Diamondbacks winning their respective matchups. Atlanta sits at 83-70 on the season with nine games remaining, trailing both clubs by two games for one of the final spots in the NL Wild Card race.
If the Braves are going to pull a rabbit out of their hat over the final couple of weeks, it will have to be of their own doing. Nobody is going to hand them anything. The Mets have the best record in baseball dating back to the start of June, and the Diamondbacks have been among the best clubs since the All-Star break.
The good news is everything is still right in front of Brian Snitker’s club. To begin next week, the Braves host the Mets at Truist Park for a three-game set. It’ll be a matchup where records and recent performances go out the window, one last chance for the Braves to save their season in front of a home crowd. It may not be what most expected coming into the season, but after all of the injuries this club has suffered over the last six months, it’s still an opportunity they should relish against a divisional foe.
