For about a week, the media would’ve had you believe that Justin Fields to the Falcons was a done deal. Now, it seems very unlikely.
At one point, Atlanta was the overwhelming betting favorites to land the Georgia native, but a few rumors and reports quashed that narrative. ESPN’s Adam Schefter went as far as to say the Falcons would be a surprise to trade for Fields.
“There’s been a lot of speculation on Atlanta,” Schefter said. “I think Atlanta will be something of a surprise right now to trade for Justin Fields. There’s been some conversation about the Pittsburgh Steelers, maybe something can be figured out there.”
It seems the Justin Fields trade has lost steam across the board, not just for the Falcons. NFL insider Michael Lombardi added that he can’t find a team with interest in Fields, that there’s a good chance he’ll be a backup in 2024 or at least in a quarterback competition.

The Eagles make sense – backing up Jalen Hurts in an offense that fits his skill set.

Now, I would rather have Justin Fields as my starting quarterback over a handful of projected starters, but that doesn’t account for the trade compensation and media circus associated with acquiring the former first-round pick.
The Falcons could still spin the wheels on a deal for Fields, but I think it’s quite clear how the new regime values the available quarterback options, and Kirk Cousins is by far and away the preferable choice over Fields.
These situations are fluid, though. I wouldn’t consider anything concrete until the pen is put to paper, especially in rumor mill season.
