There hasn’t been much noise about the Falcons search for a quarterback outside of speculation.
We know that Zac Robinson, Raheem Morris, and Terry Fontenot want a high-level processor that has all of the other intangibles of a great signal caller, but they left the door open to a pocket passer or a more mobile player.
We do have our first bit of information on what the Falcons want in their potential target, though. According to Daniel Jeremiah of NFL Media, Arthur Blank wants a young quarterback for the team, at least that’s what coaches took away from the head coaching interviews.
“Based off just a lot of a buzz and chatter of folks that are connected to those who interviewed for that job and there seemed to be a thought coming out of those coaching interviews that from ownership at the very top they want a young quarterback,” Jeremiah explained when talking about his latest mock draft that had the Falcons selecting J.J. McCarthy.
Ideally, the Falcons find a franchise quarterback in the draft to build around and compete with throughout his rookie contract. That would enable Fontenot to spend money on other positions while the signal caller was on that immensely valuable rookie pay scale.
That may not be possible, though. J.J. McCarthy, Bo Nix, and Michael Penix seem like they’ll be the prospects the Falcons will be able to choose from as the top three — Caleb Williams, Drake Maye, and Jayden Daniels — are expected to go off the board in the first three picks.
Now, there’s a chance that one of the Bears, Commanders, or Patriots get cold feet. If that’s the case, the Falcons shouldn’t hesitate to move mountains for a chance to land one of Williams, Maye, or Daniels.
Out of the three that are expected to be available, McCarthy seems closer to the top three than Nix or Penix, but he would certainly need some seasoning before the Falcons could expect to compete with him under center.
On the other hand, Justin Fields fits the billing as well. No, he doesn’t have the rookie contract that the other young quarterbacks would, but Fields is a talented, yet underachieving quarterback that could potentially be the franchise guy if he realizes his full potential.
Arthur Blank wants to find Matt Ryan’s long-term successor, the next franchise quarterback, which is what most fans want.
