With all signs pointing to the Falcons hiring Bill Belichick as the team’s next head coach, it won’t happen this weekend, even though he’s already met with Arthur Blank, Rich McKay, and Terry Fontenot in his second interview with the organization.
The reason it won’t happen this weekend is because the Falcons still have to satisfy the Rooney Rule by interviewing at least two minority candidates in person. So, even if the Falcons intend on hiring Belichick, it won’t come for at least another week or so until Blank meets with two external candidates that satisfy the Rooney Rule. The Falcons still already have interviews on the docket with Jim Harbaugh and Mike Vrabel, two of the most enticing candidates on the market.
However, it seems that Arthur Blank’s heart is set on Bill Belichick and the rest of these interviews are trivial. NFL insider Josina Anderson, who was the first to report of an NFC South team interested in Belichick even before Arthur Smith was fired, is ‘expecting’ the greatest of all time to become the Falcons’ next head coach.
Barring a snag in negotiations or a future development (still have to get a signature), I’m expecting Bill Belichick to become the next head coach of the NFC South* Atlanta Falcons. His previous rapport with #Falcons CEO Rich McKay creates comfort he can’t mimic in any other… https://t.co/lnVHs88mHK

Anderson has been all over this since even before the Falcons fired Arthur Smith and Bill Belichick parted ways with the Patriots. There’s a lot that can change from now until he signs the dotted line. Still, the Falcons are the only team with a head coach opening that has been connected to Belichick. It seems like if he wants to be in Atlanta, it’ll happen.
The only question left to be answered is the Falcons’ direction following the hiring. Where will they go at quarterback? Who will be the offensive coordinator? What will Terry Fontenot’s role be? Honestly, Bill Belichick brings more questions than answers to Atlanta.
